In 1959, Ernie Fraze was out on a picnic when he realized he forgot a can opener for the drinks.During this time, soda cans had to be opened the way tomato cans are today. With no tools at his disposal, he pried open the drinks with a car bumper.
Not too long after, Fraze solved his picnic dilemma by designed the first ever “pop top” soda can. It opened with a removable tab.
As the owner of a successful engineering firm, Fraze’s company manufactured a system that mass produced the pop top can. In less than 20 years, his company made more than $500 million in annual revenue.
